Tramonti was most likely founded in 268 b.c.
by the Picentini who fled to the valley after defeat by the
Romans. Rome in due course extended its power over its inhabitants by governing
within a single consortium both Amalfi and Scala. For several centuries it was the most densly populated town on the Amalfi Coast. The blusterous, cold dry Tramontana wind that blows from the mountains to the sea, known to fishermen the world over, takes its name from the town. Tramonti is the birthplace of Mario Cuomo's mother, New York's three-term Governor, who was elected with the highest number of votes in his third election. Tramonti is a peaceful town with a gentle pace of life where you can enjoy your holiday in the lush green countryside of its valley. |
